The Honourable Lois E. Mitchell Graduating Social Studies Teacher Award

 
  • The Honourable Lois E. Mitchell Graduating Social Studies Teacher Award is presented annually at identified post-secondary institutions in Alberta to encourage and assist students graduating as teachers with a specialty in Social Studies or History.

  • The Award is a project of the History and Heroes Foundation, which was established in 2016 by The Honourable Lois Mitchell CM, AOE, LLD, the 18th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta to create greater public awareness and appreciation for Canada’s and Alberta’s history and heritage.

  • The Award is funded through generous private donations and bequests to the Edmonton Community Foundation as endowed funds. 


Eligibility

  • Students graduating with a Bachelor of Education degree and specializing in Social Studies or History.

  • Students must have demonstrated satisfactory academic standing, good character, and innovation in teaching and display a passion for Canada’s and Alberta’s history.

Process

  • Identified post-secondary institutions in Alberta shall be asked to submit three finalists to the Heroes & Foundation through a selection process of their choice.

  • The finalists will be invited to create a presentation for an existing judging panel that will determine the winner of a glass owl statue, to be presented by The Honourable Lois Mitchell

  • An appropriate awards ceremony will be determined between the institution and the Foundation.

  • The History and Heroes Foundation's mandate is to distribute the Award equitably across the province according to the Foundation’s criteria and availability of funds. 

  • Each participating institution will be contacted as to the success of their candidates.
